One of our main goals is to keep a global perspective in every project while designing with the sensitivity of a local. With experience in over 18 countries, we know that creating from a local perspective not only involves understanding the terrain and bioclimatic conditions but also leveraging each city's unique features: society, culture, customs, and more.
Today, we focus on Torremolinos, located in the beautiful Costa del Sol, south of Málaga, just steps away from Playa de la Carihuela.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
The first challenge we faced was the shape and location of the land. With irregular boundaries and a triangular terrain oriented south towards the sea, controlling sunlight was crucial. The client’s main need was to create private spaces, both indoors and outdoors, for the residents. The project included the construction of 14 residences.
PROPOSAL
We proposed a dynamic architecture that opens up to maximize views and light while embracing communal areas. The new building fit perfectly within the triangular morphology of the plot, developed into two L-shaped structures. This freed up more outdoor space with better orientation, dedicated to the communal pool area.
The apartments face east and south, leaving the rear for access routes through common corridors and side terraces on each floor. The vertical circulation core was positioned at the junction between the two main volumes.
Drawing inspiration from the interplay of light and shadow through palm fronds and pergolas, we proposed vertical blinds that enhance the facade’s rhythm, effectively controlling and directing sunlight. These blinds, along with pergolas, offer privacy by creating visual patterns with shadows. We designed south-facing gardens and side terraces that filter sunlight, providing privacy to the spaces.
By designing as locals, we addressed the community’s needs, creating a perfect harmony between indoor and outdoor spaces, inviting residents to bask in the warm glow of the Costa del Sol.
This project exemplifies how integrating natural elements and respecting the environment can create unique living spaces. Our proposal blends innovative architectural solutions with a deep understanding of the local context, resulting in a place that celebrates both modernity and the traditional beauty of the region.
